What is NMKNS?

NMKNS” stems from my childhood name “Nimkiins” which means Little Thunder Spirit. It describes the way in which my passion for change, collaboration, and inclusivity stem from a childhood’s desire to be a part of community. This name carries the strength and spirit of my ancestors, guiding me in the work I do to uplift Indigenous communities through Life Promotion, creation, and education.

At the heart of NMKNS is a deep belief in the power of our traditional knowledge systems, which offer pathways to healing, resilience, and empowerment. The collective has started as a community-driven initiative aimed at empowering Indigenous youth through cultural revitalization, education, and leadership development. Our vision is to create a supportive and inclusive space where young Indigenous individuals can reconnect with their heritage, strengthen their sense of identity, and develop the skills necessary to become future leaders within their communities.

NMKNS strives to instill a sense of pride and resilience in Indigenous youth while equipping them with the tools they need to address the social, economic, and environmental challenges facing their communities. By fostering a strong sense of cultural identity and belonging, we aim to empower Indigenous youth to become agents of positive change and catalysts for community development. NMKNS continues to expand its reach, deepen its impact, and continue to uplift Indigenous youth to reclaim their voices and shape their own futures.

Here, we embrace our shared responsibility to uplift each other, reconnect with the land, and celebrate the richness of our heritage. Together, we are revitalizing life and creating spaces for Indigenous voices to be heard, respected, and celebrated.

NMKNS exists as a hub where I, Connor Lafortune, can work, live, and thrive as a Queer Anishinaabek storyteller, activist, performer, and artist.
